What are Rice Hulls?

Rice hulls are the robust protective coverings of rice grains. These hulls can be repurposed as building materials, fertilizers, insulation, or energy sources.

Rice hulls have been effectively utilized to improve aeration in compacted soils and soil mixtures. They possess a high silica content that is gradually released into the soil over time as they decompose.

Benefits of Rice Hulls

Rice hulls serve as an excellent carbon source, which, upon composting, can significantly enhance the soil's water and nutrient retention capacity. They also contribute to improved soil aggregation, porosity, infiltration, and various other critical beneficial physical attributes of soil.

How to Utilize Rice Hulls

• For your garden soil, apply a strong layer measuring approximately 2" across the surface during spring fertilization, and incorporate it into the top 6–12" of soil.

• For potted plants, it is advisable to mix 10–50% rice hulls into the potting soil.

• Rice hulls may serve as mulch for your garden beds, similar to the application of straw.

• Due to their extremely lightweight nature, rice hulls are particularly suitable for rooftop gardening or any other garden types that necessitate an amendment to lighten the soil composition.
