What is Compost?

Compost is a carefully balanced mixture of organic materials utilized as a plant fertilizer, improving the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil. It is typically produced by decomposing plant matter, food waste, recycling organic materials, and various types of manure.

Compost enriches soil, enhances moisture retention, and suppresses plant diseases and pests. It minimizes the necessity for chemical fertilizers and fosters the growth of beneficial bacteria and fungi that decompose organic matter into humus, a nutrient-rich material.

How to Use Compost

There are various methods to incorporate compost into your gardening practice. You can either sprinkle compost on the surface or integrate it into your flower and vegetable beds, gently raking it into tree beds, blending it with potting soil to rejuvenate indoor plants, or applying it as a soil amendment on top of your lawn.

Mix four parts soil with one part compost. Additionally, you may top dress perennial flower gardens with no more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch of compost.

Alternatively, you can prepare compost tea by adding compost to water and utilizing a pump with a bubbler to aerate the mixture for 24-48 hours. Enhance your tea further by incorporating elements such as: Worm Castings, Alfalfa meal, Yucca, Humic Acid, and other beneficial additives!
